Job Description: Library and Information Science - Archiving - Music Archivist
Position Overview:
The Music Archivist is responsible for the systematic organization, preservation, and maintenance of a music collection within a library or archival setting. This role requires a deep understanding and appreciation for music history and an ability to manage and curate a diverse range of music materials.
Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement effective strategies for acquiring, cataloging, and preserving music-related materials, including audio recordings, sheet music, manuscripts, photographs, and other relevant formats.
2. Conduct thorough research and analysis to ensure accurate and detailed cataloging of music collections, adhering to established metadata standards and best practices.
3. Collaborate with library staff, researchers, and external partners to identify, appraise, and acquire valuable music materials for the collection.
4. Organize and maintain physical and digital collections, ensuring proper storage, handling, and preservation techniques are followed to extend the lifespan of materials.
5. Develop and maintain comprehensive finding aids, inventories, databases, and accurate records to facilitate easy retrieval and access to music materials.
6. Provide expert guidance and support to library users, assisting with research inquiries, reference requests, and recommendations for accessing the music collection.
7. Stay up-to-date with emerging trends and advancements in archival practices, digital preservation, and metadata standards, and apply this knowledge to enhance library services and collection management.
8. Collaborate with the library team to plan and execute exhibitions, displays, and public programs related to the music collection, engaging the community and promoting awareness of the library's resources.
9. Contribute to the development and implementation of library policies and procedures related to music archiving, ensuring compliance with copyright regulations and ethical considerations.
10. Engage in ongoing professional development activities, including attending conferences, workshops, and training sessions to enhance knowledge and skills in music archiving and library science.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science, Archival Studies, or a related field. A Master's degree in Library and Information Science with a specialization in Archival Studies is preferred.
2. Proven experience working in a library, archive, or similar cultural institution, with a specific focus on music archiving.
3. Solid knowledge of music history, genres, and formats, with the ability to accurately identify and describe a wide range of music materials.
4. Familiarity with cataloging standards and practices, such as MARC, AACR2, RDA, and Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).
5. Proficiency in using library management systems, archival databases, and digital preservation tools.
6. Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
7. Excellent research and analytical skills, with attention to detail and accuracy in cataloging and metadata creation.
8. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and assist library users.
9. Knowledge of copyright regulations, intellectual property rights, and ethical considerations in relation to music archiving.
10. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with emerging trends and technologies in library science and archival practices.
